The current drug development effort does not include numbers of research subjects adequate to detect and understand serious, rare adverse events. Whereas some have advocated having a slower launch for new drugs or testing the drug products in more patients (both of which will add to the development time and cost of the new drug products), it is also possible to envision a pharmacogenetic postmarketing surveillance program for new drug products.
